Yukihiro Katana with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate

Impressive  huge Katana made by the first generation  Shodai Yukihiro made from Nanban tetsu / imported iron ,This katana is believed to be the best work of Yukihiro. Kinzogan saidan mei of the great tester Yamano Kaemon Nagahisa. The Massive blade measures 83.3cm mounted in shirasaya with lengthy sayagaki by Tanobe Sensei also has NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon certificate.Very rare to find katana of this length  which would have been a special request of the owner who ordred this magnificent katana  to be forged by Yukihiro also comes with the original superb  koshirae, note the tsuka and nakago have  2 mekugi ana  to secure the tsuka of this massive blade whereas most katana only have a single mekugi.

Yukihiro was the  son of Hizen Yoshinobu, younger brother of  Masahiro .The first gen YUKIHIRO was 12 years younger  than his brother MASAHIRO. His real name Hashimoto Kuroubei, He  was born on Gen-na 4 (1618) as the second son of YOSHINOBU.  He was awarded the title of  Dewa-daijo title on Shouho 5 (1648) and then was awarded the prestigious  title of Dewa-no-kami on Kanbun 3(1663).

In 1650 he moved to Nagasaki to study forging with imported nanban tetsu / Dutch iron with Hisatsugu and Tanenaga and  also studied the Bizen Ichimonji style  with Noriyoshi and made copies of kamakura period  Ichimonji blades of which were signed with the Ichi character before his mei.

The hamon  of this massive katana is an excellent example of his gunome midare with his trademark abu nomefu as dots / tobiyaki above the hamon. Yukihiro was one of the favoured makers of the Nabeshima clan along with greats of the Hizen Tadayoshi school

Yukihiro died on May 27, 1683, 3rd year of Tenna. six more generations of Yukihiro followed in their masters footsteps.

Tanobe Sensei sayagaki English translation

Hizen no Kuni Dewa no Daijo Fujiwara Yukihiro

This blade has a ten character signature with the supplement that it was made by using Dutch/foreign imported iron and also bears a kinzogan cutting test inscription which states that Yamano Kaemon no Jo Nagahisa cut with this blade on the eleventh day of the seventh month Manji three (1660) through mitsu do . The overlong blade is of a very healthy sugata and features a kitae in fine konuka-hada and a hardening in vibrant midare that is rich in variety. The deki is excellent and this masterwork truly shows the characteristic features and ability of the first generation.

Blade length ~ 83.3 cm Written by Tanzan Hendo [Tanobe Michihiro] in February of the year of the monkey of this era (2016).
