Ishiguro Iwata (⽯⿊岩太)
March 30, 1892 – October 15, 1951. Major General. Born as the second son of Ishiguro Keisuke
(⽯⿊慶助) in Tsuruoka. Graduated in 1910 from Shōnai Junior High School and entered the
Imperial Japanese Army Academy, from which he graduated in May of 1913 (25th term).
Promoted to Second Infantry Lieutenant in December that year and enisted in the 25th Infantry
Regiment, Sapporo. After serving in Hamhung, Kyōto, Seoul, Pyongyang, and Sapporo, he was
transferred to the Asahikawa 28th Infantry Regiment in January of 1938. In August the following
year, he was promoted to Colonel and assigned to the 7th Division Headquarters and
subsequently participated in the Battles of Khalkhin Gol/Nomomhan. In October that year, he
was appointed as Commander of the 13th Independent Infantry Regiment, was stationed in
Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, and participated in the Battle of Wuyuan and in the Zhejiang-Jiangxi
Campaign. In January of 1943, he was appointed Commander of the Nara Regimental District.
In February of 1945, he was appointed Commander of the 95th Independent Mixed Brigade and
served in Noshiro and Hachinohe. In March that year, he was promoted to Major General and
put all his strength into the defense of Japan until the end of the war. Recipient of the Order of
the Golden Kite 4th Class. Died age 59 in Akashi and was buried at the Yūsei-ji (宥清寺) in
Kyōto. [Added in handwriting:] Buried at the Narashino City (習志野市) Public Cemetary. 1989.
